Getting Ready for Artweeks - 25th April

Jean Wykes and Sam Cleasby are running a drawing workshop from 1-2 on Saturday 25th April 2015 at the Oxford Museum of Natural History as part of the Oxford Artweeks 'Ideas in the Making' Symposium.

Ruth Dodd Pottery

Ruth attended art school in Manchester in the 1960’s, but followed a different career and only returned to ceramics four years ago when she retired. She has been working in three areas. Pots based on the shapes of Foraminifera and Echinoderms, large handbuilt pots mainly for the garden, and thrown domestic wear.

"I love the intricacy of these natural structures and the challenge of representing their often very complicated shapes in clay."

Forams are the microscopic shells of large single celled protists, which after death settle in the sediment of the ocean floor and are one of the things that form limestone. They are a vital part of the biological cycle that removes carbon dioxide dissolved in seawater and are now being adversely affected by global warming,

Echinoderms are a group of animals that include star fish, sea urchins, sand dollars and blastoids.

They normally have five-sided symmetry and are found in every ocean, but not on land or in fresh water. They have the ability to regenerate limbs and organs and to reproduce asexually. They are also a major contributor to the formation of limestone, so many large man made structures are built from rock formed by these creatures.

"I like working on a large scale and have been making bird-baths and jardinières based on the shape of cooling towers whose shape I find very beautiful. Also I am making large spheres with apertures for planting. I like to use mixtures of coloured glazes  and volcanic glazes with ash to give unpredictable effects with bubbling and runs in the glaze."

"I am making bowls, mugs, tea light holders and goblets that are functional and I mostly use a combination of two contrasting colours on them highlighted with white ash Nuka glaze. Some of them also have the bubbling volcanic glaze."

Getting Ready for Artweeks - Wood Farm School

Years 5 and 6 at Wood Farm school met some birds of prey and have been inspired to create their own bird collages and careful observational drawings. They look fantastic! They are now working on getting things displayed ready for Arts Week.

Wood Farm School is on Titup Hall Drive, OX3 8QQ, and they are open on the 11th, 12th and 13th May from 1.30-2.30 pm.

Planning your Artweeks tour of Headington

This year there are 13 Artweeks venues in Headington and Marston - and we've put together a trail map to help you find your way between the venues.

Headington and Marston Artweeks runs from 9-17 May 2015 with most venues being open from mid-day on Saturday 9th.

Ross Mackenzie - Wild Scotland

Ross is a wildplaces photographer based in Oxford and in the Shetland Islands.

His portfolio is of photographs taken in cold remote places from the Arctic to the Antarctic.  This includes polar bears in Svalbard and along the Northwest Passage, penguins in South Georgia and on the Antarctic Peninsula and wildlife and landscapes in numerous remote islands from both ends of the planet.

Over the past year he has been concentrating on wild places in the British Isles, particularly the highlands and islands of Scotland.  In this years artweeks exhibition, in addition to the polar bears and penguins,  you will be able to see images from St Kilda, from the Cairngorms, from the Flow Country in the far north of the Scottish mainland and from the Shetland Islands too.

You will be able to see Ross' pictures at 34 Stile Road in Headington from 9th - 17th May, from midday to 18:00 each day (and from midday to 8:00 pm on Thursday 14th May).

Kamel Koria - Mary Moser Award winner 2015

Painter Kamal Koria from Barrington Close, Headington is the proud winner of the 2015 Mary Moser Award, an annual award established to help develop the career of a professional artist who has taken up art as a second career later in life. It’s the second time in two years that this award has been won by a Headington artist.

Artweeks at Oxford Brookes 2015

Students at Oxford Brookes University are very excited that Will Gompertz, BBC Arts Editor, has confirmed that he will be the Guest Speaker at their Private View Opening Ceremony on 15.5.2015. This is due to take place at 6 pm in the Glass Tank of the Abercrombie Building next to the prestigious John Henry Brookes Building.  So be there 5.45 pm to see the exhibition and hear Will.  

Put it in your diaries, and come along to hear the celebrity speak.  All welcome. 

Come and see the results of all the students' hard work on display both in the Glass Tank Gallery space , and across the road in the Richard Hamilton Building. There's more information on the Artweeks Website.

If you are indulging in a spot of forward planning...

In 2015, Oxfordshire Artweeks runs from 2nd - 25th May.  Headington and Marston Artweeks is in the middle of Artweeks this year, running from Saturday 9th May to Sunday 17th May 2015.

There will be more information about the participating artists in Headington and Marston added to this site over the coming months.

And while you've got your diary out - Oxfordshire Artweeks Christmas show will be over the weekend of 14th & 15th November 2015.

The Big Draw

Jean Wykes as a Campaigner for Drawing, and a student of Art at Oxford Brookes University, is inviting all  schools in Headington and Oxford Brookes Foundation to participate in the Big Draw. Quentin Blake and Andrew Marr are promoting this Campaign which upholds John Ruskin's belief that drawing helps us to understand the world and to respect it more. The theme for the Big Draw this year is “It's Our World”, and is meant to be a celebration of our environment. To narrow things down a little, and hopefully make things simple, Jean  has suggested young people draw their route to school/college. This of course is still open to myriad interpretations as they could draw anybody they meet or anything they see along the route.  Jean will upload the drawings onto the Big Draw website so anyone worldwide can see them. She will also laminate the drawings for display in Barclays Bank Headington, who have kindly agreed to display all the pictures, for Half Term and 3 weeks thereafter,

Jean is also inviting all these young people and their families to join in the Big Draw, to cover the Pavements of Headington in one big colourful chalk drawing. There are posters all around Oxford Brookes inviting students to come and help with the Big Draw, which Jean hopes will cover the pavements from Ox Brookes all the way up to Headington with a chalked big drawing.

There are customised bicycles for display and advertising and put these outside Oxford Brookes Richard Hamilton building and also outside John Henry Brookes Building chained to the bicycle racks. Coloured bicycles personalized by Jean are also on display all over Headington inviting everyone to join in the Big Draw, making Headington colourful on Saturday 18 and 25 October.
