The Big Draw

Jean Wykes as a Campaigner for Drawing, and a student of Art at Oxford Brookes University, is inviting all  schools in Headington and Oxford Brookes Foundation to participate in the Big Draw. Quentin Blake and Andrew Marr are promoting this Campaign which upholds John Ruskin's belief that drawing helps us to understand the world and to respect it more. Please check out their website for more information: www.campaignfordrawing.org

The theme for the Big Draw this year is “It's Our World”, and is meant to be a celebration of our environment. To narrow things down a little, and hopefully make things simple, Jean  has suggested young people draw their route to school/college. This of course is still open to myriad interpretations as they could draw anybody they meet or anything they see along the route.  Jean will upload the drawings onto the Big Draw website so anyone worldwide can see them. She will also laminate the drawings for display in Barclays Bank Headington, who have kindly agreed to display all the pictures, for Half Term and 3 weeks thereafter,

Jean is also inviting all these young people and their families to join in the Big Draw, to cover the Pavements of Headington in one big colourful chalk drawing. There are posters all around Oxford Brookes inviting students to come and help with the Big Draw, which Jean hopes will cover the pavements from Ox Brookes all the way up to Headington with a chalked big drawing.

There are customised bicycles for display and advertising and put these outside Oxford Brookes Richard Hamilton building and also outside John Henry Brookes Building chained to the bicycle racks. Coloured bicycles personalized by Jean are also on display all over Headington inviting everyone to join in the Big Draw, making Headington colourful on Saturday 18 and 25 October.

Join in the Big Draw during October. See www.thebigdraw.org

Cover all of  Headington's Pavements with one big chalked drawing.

Where? Pavements of Headington
When? Saturdays 18th and 25th October
What time? 9.30am to 3.30pm

Lots of artists, art enthusiasts and not a few bemused Saturday morning shoppers got caught up in the launch event for Headington and Marston Artweeks today.

The launch event provided a chance to get a glimpse of the range of talents on show during Artweeks, along with musical and dramatic street entertainment from the Horns of Plenty band, and the Fairy Dust Arts theatre group.

After the launch event the focus now switches to the numerous studios and galleries around Headington and Marston that are open until Monday 26th May.  The artists link above gives you a list of all the artists and their exhibition spaces, and you can also pick up a trail map showing all the sites by visiting any of the artists studios.

These images and others from the launch, taken by Ross Mackenzie, are also on his Flickr site.

Victoria Hallam

Victoria is interested in the patterns of landscape and the way the colours change over the course of the year. She is also passionately interested in the 'landscape' of the human form and makes small life figure sculptures often fired to terracotta or glazed. She also makes full sized portrait heads finished in various mediums such as terracotta, resin or cement fondu which is tough enough to stay permanently outside. There are examples of these in her garden.

Lou Cox

Warm Embrace
Lou Cox will be exhibiting with Kennett Road artists in Headington 17th-26th May, 12-6pm.

Lou will be exhibiting beautiful sculptures of the female form and sculptural lighting in porcelain and clay.

The sculptural light pictured is called Warm Embrace and is hand built in white clay.

Lou explains: "This sculpture had many inspirational starting points. I am interested in how birds flock together. I looked at starlings and admired the way they dance with each other at sunset. This is called a murmuration and is one of the most beautiful natural experiences. I love the way the birds glide and swoop in group formation and by uniting together the birds are safe and protected from predators. I was also partly inspired by my dear grandfather, who introduced me to nature and taught me about the stars and galaxies."

"I create sculptures that offer a sensory experience. The use of light, warmth and textures can also be enjoyed by a person with visual impairment."

Warm Embrace is a unique sculpture and glows beautifully when lit up; come and see for yourself at 13 Kennett Road in Headington, Oxford, 17th-26th May, 12-6pm.

“The small blocks of colour are versatile enough to portray everything from the solidity of stone walls to the movement of water. It seems strange that such an artisanal tool as a palette knife can describe both the delicacy of poppies as well as the interplay of light and shadow between trees…Whether the subject is St Petersburg's canals and bridges or the trees and paths of the countryside, the combination of technical mastery and studied emotion is fully in the tradition of Russian art”. (P Moss, art collector)

Angela Washbrook

Angela's theme for this exhibition is Past and Present: a variety of hand built ceramics in richly coloured glazes reflecting ancient civilizations such as those in the Middle East and India, contrasting with a selection of figurative and non-figurative ceramics and paintings in mixed media in the modern idiom.
Ceramic pieces include vases, bowls, mirror frames, wall plaques and lights and small trays and tiles. Some are unglazed terracotta decorated with coloured slips; others are lavishly decorated in strong colours, using underglazes, slips and brush-on glazes. Her drawings and paintings span a variety of disciplines such as watercolour, pastel and oils and also some prints, whilst the modern ceramic pieces have a sculptural quality; some are inspired by the human body, others by natural forms.
Easily accessible pleasant setting in conservatory overlooking garden - refreshments available.

Friday 7 March 2014

Susan Cox

Susan has been painting figuratively since training at art school in Birmingham. Her work describes personal narratives using strong colours and movement. She works in acrylic and oils on canvas, mono prints on paper, and figure drawing. Through travel in Brazil, Africa, and India themes were generated around the places seen and experienced. More recent paintings have become more influenced by British traditions - particularly from the Bloomsbury period.

Thursday 6 March 2014

Kit Adlington

Kit has a preference for thrown functional stoneware, producing pots which are not only attractive but also strong and hard wearing.
