“The small blocks of colour are versatile enough to portray everything from the solidity of stone walls to the movement of water. It seems strange that such an artisanal tool as a palette knife can describe both the delicacy of poppies as well as the interplay of light and shadow between trees…Whether the subject is St Petersburg's canals and bridges or the trees and paths of the countryside, the combination of technical mastery and studied emotion is fully in the tradition of Russian art”.
